How much notice must my employer give to end my job?
- Under the model standing orders, a permanent worker gets a month’s notice or wages instead order 23(1)(i).
- A temporary worker, probationer, substitute, or fixed-term or casual worker whose contract is not renewed or has expired gets no notice or pay instead order 23(2).
- Retrenchment has its own notice rule s. 70(a).
The model standing orders are for industrial establishments with three hundred or more workers (IR Code s. 28(1)), and your employer's certified standing orders may differ. Elsewhere, check your appointment letter, and see what applies at a smaller workplace.
The citations are to the service sector's model. These points read the same for manufacturing (order 22) and mining (order 23).
