Do the Labour Codes cover apprentices and interns?

  • An apprentice under the Apprentices Act is left out of the definition of employee CW s. 2(k) IR s. 2(l).
  • The Codes do not use the word intern, so whether you are an employee depends on whether you are employed on wages to do the work the definition lists CW s. 2(k).
  • An apprentice has separate rules under the Apprentices Act, as a trainee and not a worker Apprentices Act s. 18.

This comes from the Apprentices Act, 1961, as amended up to 2014, not the Labour Codes. Its rules, which set the stipend rates, are not in this library.
